Wilko Johnson (& John Otway)

16th July 2022

Cheltenham Town Hall

If it ain't broke, then why try to fix it, i am sure is John Otway's motto, as he entertained us all this evening with an act which I rather doubt has changed much for decades.  Always great fun, Otway is a chap I have long held a soft spot for ever since that testicle crushing performance on The Old Grey Whistle Test back in 1977.

This must have been one of Wilko Johnson's final live performances, before passing in November 2022, just four months after this gig.  And a fine performance it was, the man backed by Dylan Howe and the formidable Norman Watt-Roy.

Was he ill here?  I have no way of telling.  Since shaving his head some years back, he always struck a slightly cadaverous image.  He had, of course, been given the all clear following treatment for pancreatic cancer diagnosed back in 2013.
