Bruce Springsteen

30th May 2023

Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh

I never really "got" Bruce Springsteen, I have to say.  My good friend Scott, who passed in 2023, did his best.  I can remember him, within a few weeks of us first meeting in the late 1970s pressing upon me the Born to Run and Darkness on the Edge of Town albums.  The title track of the former, I could immediately tell was a bona fide rock classic, but the rest of the songs just struck me as rather bleh.  Any message swamped by Springsteen's contrived overwrought singing style.  Everything was such a bloody drama.  Candy's Room alone seemed to catch my attention from the other album.

A few years later I gave the chap another go and attempted to approach his squillion selling Born in the USA album with an open mind.  But again, much of the collection left me cold, only Glory Days and (inevitably) Dancing in the Dark floating my boat.  Even then, I preferred the cover of the latter by parody doo-wop band Big Daddy to the original.

So, for a (very) casual fan like me this evening was a case of sitting through a LOT of unfamiliar tunes awaiting the inevitable glut of hits which comprised the encore.  Which, when they arrived, was well worth waiting for.
